Social Studies

In kindergarten, students begin to understand the foundations of social studies: history, geography, government, and economics. Students begin their introduction to United States history by studying important American holidays and symbols. Basic concepts of geography are presented. Civics provides students with an introduction to the rules and character traits of good citizens. Basic economic concepts are also introduced.

At OPK, we use the KinderSocialStudies curriculum, a social studies curriculum for primary-aged students. It is an engaging social studies curriculum with young learners in mind! It encourages young learners to think “outside the box” and prove their thinking through hands-on and engaging learning experiences. It is based upon six units: Rules, United States/Community Helpers, Maps, Countries, Economics, and Then & Now. All units are aligned with Georgia Standards of Excellence.
